New Pronoun Option for Annual Meeting Badges A new feature available at the 2020 will be the option to include pronouns on badges. Pronouns can be selected and added to your badge during on-site registration. This is a small feature the AAG offers its members as the organization explores how to best incorporate this inclusiveness into our policy. The following information on pronoun usage is provided by AAG members Rae Rosenberg and Julian Barr with Sexuality and Space specialty group board assistance: Pronouns are one of many ways that we as people portray our identities to the outside world. When we use the pronouns someone identifies with, we signal that we respect who they are. Trans and gender non-conforming individuals experience harassment and other forms of aggression on a regular basis, and incorrect use of pronouns is a common method of harassment. The only respectful practice is to use the pronouns people ask you to use, regardless of your personal opinion over proper grammar or appropriateness of the pronouns being used. Pronouns that are commonly used include, but are not limited to, she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs, and ze/hir/hirs. Sometimes you will not know someone’s pronouns, and in these cases we strongly suggest you use the gender neutral they/them/theirs, unless told otherwise by the person, rather than assume their pronouns. We also strongly recommend people to introduce themselves and include personal pronouns at conferences like the AAG or in written/verbal communication. You can do this verbally, on presentation slides, on your name tags, and your email signature. This signals to others that you are aware of the use of correct pronouns and people will feel more comfortable sharing their own. You can always ask for pronouns but please do so politely. Lastly, if you make a mistake with someone’s pronouns or are corrected by someone else, simply correct yourself rather than try to explain why you made the mistake. If you continue to use the wrong pronouns and/or intentionally do not use the correct pronouns, then you are committing a form of harassment and gender discrimination.Platinum Sponsors Gold Sponsors Silver SponsorsBronze SponsorQuestions?
